Hi I'm wondering, how useful would the particle cannon and shield be? If most people just create fleets instead of defense, is there any point of using it?

It is most often used by players in lower to mid level Attack Zones who don't have the fleet to break down someone's defenses. A group of players with cannons can do serious damage to a defensive wall with coordinated particle cannons.
But another common use is just to mess with someone that you find irritating.
Having said all that, most big players keep a reasonably sized defensive wall to protect their overnight resource production, so they will have a good sized shield as well.
